We realise that most travellers will have some questions about NZ car or camper hire so we have compiled a list of these frequently asked questions to help you out. Just leave it up to the New Zealand tourism experts!

I don't turn 18 till I get to NZ. Can I hire one of your vehicles?

We realize a lot of 18 and 19 year olds want to hire a car or campervan so we have made sure you can do this with us. As long as you've turned 18 before you hire the vehicle, and have had a suitable license for 2 years prior, you can drive it as much as you like. See the terms & conditions documents at the bottom of our Camper Insurance page for full info.

How is driving in NZ different?

We drive on the left side of the road, which may take some getting used to for some of you. For those that also drive on the left we have a different interpretation of the give way rule than most countries (hey we didn't make the rules, if we did they'd be easier!). As for New Zealand road rules, we provide a driver guide and NZ maps in your vehicle, so have a read through before you take off.

I'm not a confident driver, how else can I see NZ?

Get a mate to come along and do the driving. It's better to share your experiences with someone else anyway. Or if you're still coming solo you could meet someone here, there are ample opportunities to meet other travellers and then travel together. If you decide that hiring a vehicle is not for you after all, take the Kiwi Experience bus and let someone else do the driving!

If I'm loving my trip so much can I extend it for longer?

We hire our vehicles out in advance so you'll need to give us a call but, if we can help you out we will. See the terms & conditions documents at the bottom of our Camper Insurance page for full info.

How do I get between the North and South Islands?

You can cross the Cook Straight on an InterIsland ferry. They take hundreds of vehicles over every day, so you and your vehicle will be sweet to get onboard. With Explore More, you get a discount on your ferry crossing too!

What is included in the daily hire rate?

Our daily rate includes: unlimited kilometres, a fully equipped vehicle, 24 hour roadside assistance, standard insurance, maps and a number of travel and attraction discounts. They're all packed full of features that we've no doubt forgotten some - enjoy the surprises!

Are there any 'no go' zones where I can't drive my vehicle?

There are some spots in New Zealand that we like to keep car free. These include: Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt Cook), North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula) and Tapu-Coroglen Road (Coromandel Peninsula). Feel free to walk around though. Ask upon vehicle check out for a comprehensive list of roads you can't drive on.

What if I have an accident?

All our hire vehicles are registered with the AA (Automobile Association) and covered for 24/7 roadside assistance. If you are experiencing problems, then they can assist you to get back on track. Alternatively, you can call us anytime during opening hours; we like to make sure that you are having a fantastic time and not just stuck by the side of the road! See Car roadside support and Camper van roadside support pages for more information.

What else can you offer us?

Additional products for hire include: chairs, tables, hot water bottles (hottie in NZ slang), tents and much much more...

Please Contact us for anything else, anything at all.

Do you have any larger campervans?

Our largest campervans are 2 berths only, but our mates at Backpacker Campervans will be able to suss you out for something a bit bigger at reasonable price.
